Duke Nukem 3D was based off of the Build Engine created by Ken Silverman, with said engine being designed to be HIGHLY modifiable. On top of that, Duke3D came pre-loaded with tools and examples to help people get into modding the game with minimal effort! This is very handy so you don't constantly have to keep the cursor over what you're trying to modify. * One of the few features which is not well documented is "Visibility". While you can change the brightness of surfaces using the keypad plus and minus keys, each sector itself also has a visibility setting which determines how quickly brightness falls off with distance. Curiously, the default value of 0 wraps around backwards to 255, with 240 being the "lowest" value, resulting in absolutely no brightness falloff, while 239 is the "highest" value where you pretty much can't see more than a few inches in front of you. * Keep in mind that some entities in the game are designed to behave differently when given different palette settings.
