Making games without an ounce of code? Sounds too good to be true right? Well... Today for the Season 5 Finale of Ancient DOS Games, Gemini's taking a look Game-Maker, specifically, the one developed by Recreational Software Designs in the early 90s, with the intent being to allow people to make their own games using VGA 256-colour graphics with zero coding experience required! As you might imagine, this thing... didn't quite live up to the hype for a number of reasons, but it's still a very unique and interesting thing despite its issues, though really, the only thing stopping it from gaining traction was the fierce competition it ended up against not long following its initial release... ------------------------------------------ Additional Information and Corrections: * If you wanna grab a copy of Game-Maker as well as download tons of games made for it, navigate your way over here: http://www.aderack.com/game-maker * If you'd like to download the game I made with this software, head to this page on my website: http://www.pixelships.com/smallgames.html * I mentioned potentially using monsters to act as doors which can open and close. You would do this by having a solid monster with a low power level which would die when the player touched it, turning into an opening animation monster with a high power level, with said monster dying once its opening, staying open, and closing animation was concluded, spawning a new closed door in its place. While this would work, solid collisions with monsters are far less reliable and can glitch out so this isn't necessarily fool-proof. * I missed mentioning that monsters can also be set to die on contact with a monster regardless of power level. The trick there though is that you cannot ALSO set the monster to die after a time period, you can only set up one custom death setting. * I also forgot to mention that there's an automatic demo-recording feature. Any time you play a Game-Maker game, it records a number of inputs to use automatically for demo modes if you then leave the game on the title screen for a period of time. ------------------------------------------ Pixelmusement Website: http://www.pixelships.com ADG on Pixelmusement: http://www.pixelships.com/adg Alphabetical Index of ADG Episodes: http://www.pixelships.com/adg/index2.html Kris' Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/kasick @Pixelmusement on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Pixelmusement
