IMPORTANT UPDATE! As of October 31st, 2020, we now all know the TRUE story of the DOS Mega Man games, thanks to Norman Caruso of The Gaming Historian web show and his interview with Stephen Rozner himself! DEFINITELY check his video out for more details about this game's history because I was working from seriously outdated information when making this video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwt5yWJqCzU ------------------------------------------ Third time's a charm, right? ...RIGHT?! Anywhoo, today on Ancient DOS Games, Gemini's taking a look at the DOS port of Mega Man X, developed by Rozner Labs, the same tiny dev team responsible for the previous DOS Mega Man games and published directly through Capcom in 1995, almost two years following the original SNES release of this game. It's very surprising that Capcom was willing to give Rozner's group one last shot after their previous attempts at making Mega Man games for DOS. In fact, the weird combination of both perfection and incompetence in this port suggests that they were under tremendous pressure to make this port as accurate as possible but either ran out of time, money, skill, or some combination thereof. Suffice to say, the original SNES game blows this one clean out of the water, but given a little more effort the story might've been VERY different! ...then again, now that we know that Rozner Labs didn't have ANY of the source code to work from to make this thing, it makes the fact that's it's as close to the SNES game as it is far more impressive... information I didn't have back when making this video so do keep that in mind! :O ------------------------------------------ Additional Information and Corrections: * Yes, I played through and beat both the DOS and SNES versions to get the footage I needed for this video. This isn't actually that long a game and if you don't make any mistakes you can easily beat it in an hour and a half or less. :B * Just to give an example of some other things which were translated perfectly: The retro cannonball bat enemy in the Armored Armadillo stage has an increased 1up rate, enemies laugh when they hit you, the enemies in the cars turn their heads to look at you, Zero's eyes don't blink properly when he's caged up, X automatically demonstrates the new skills he acquires... Admittedly, it's pretty impressive just how many of the subtle things got ported over, especially years after the fact now that we know Rozner Labs had NONE of the original source code to work with! :O ------------------------------------------ Pixelmusement Website: http://www.pixelships.com ADG on Pixelmusement: http://www.pixelships.com/adg Alphabetical Index of ADG Episodes: http://www.pixelships.com/adg/index2.html
