Because of course having throwing knives fly back at you is a good idea... :P Today on Ancient DOS Games, Gemini's taking a look at Jill of the Jungle, a platformer originally released as shareware by Epic MegaGames in 1992, though ultimately saw commercial boxed releases both as individual episodes and a complete trilogy. Now, this episode is a LOT longer than most ADG episodes since, unlike with a typical episode, Gemini's approach to covering this game is to go a bit more in-depth as to the review process than normal, primarily because this is game that a lot of DOS gamers adore but actually has a number of flaws which, by all reasoning, should've made it less impressive than people generally remember it being, yet it still ends up being a decent game, despite the fact that Gemini doesn't like it. ------------------------------------------ Additional Information and Corrections: * Jill of the Jungle is now FREE to grab from GOG! Navigate your way over to this link if you want to download it: https://www.gog.com/game/jill_of_the_jungle_the_complete_trilogy/?pp=91dfde1d6e005e422f64a59776234f1f4c80b5e4 * If you have a copy of Jill of the Jungle and want to look up what version it truly is, check the executable files compared to the information found on the following page: http://www.shikadi.net/moddingwiki/Jill_of_the_Jungle * There's actually a built-in level editor in these games, though it was never meant to be found/used by the average person and the review was already pretty long, thus why it wasn't mentioned. :B * There was actually a sequel to this game in the works, but it was ultimately handed over to a different developer who turned it into "Vinyl Goddess from Mars"... which is another DOS game I should probably cover one of these days. ;) * One other unusual game out there which ties in directly with the Jill games is "Onesimus", which uses the same engine and many of the same levels taken from each game in the Jill trilogy, but is Christian themed in terms of the story, along with having various bible quotes strewn throughout. * Early versions of Jill of the Jungle also had little pop-up messages strewn throughout meant to insult various Apogee characters. Later versions of Jill have these pop-ups removed, likely due to complaints (or maybe even legal threats, who knows) from Apogee. ------------------------------------------ Pixelmusement Website: http://www.pixelships.com ADG on Pixelmusement: http://www.pixelships.com/adg Alphabetical Index of ADG Episodes: http://www.pixelships.com/adg/index2.html
