Usually when a game falls into obscurity, there's a reason for it. This game has MANY reasons for it. Today's Ancient DOS Game is "If It Moves, Shoot It!", also known as "Phantom Fighter" in the UK, not to be confused with the NES game of that same name. It was produced by Emerald Software and the DOS version in particular was published by Broderbund in 1989.
Also, in response to this video, SqualStrife of the RetroSwim YouTube channel recorded what the death effect transitions actually look like on an old CRT monitor. Apparently, they're achieved not by messing with the EGA timing, but by messing with the EGA's internal framebuffer! You can check this out here:

Additional Information and Corrections:
* There's actually a few more technical things this game does which are somewhat impressive from a programming standpoint. For one thing, this is a smooth-scrolling game utilizing the full-screen with full-colour, animated backgrounds, made at a time when doing such games while maintaining a proper framerate was next to impossible. Granted, the "animation" is just done using palette changes but it's done extremely well to the point where it's hard to tell that's what's going on. Also, the title screen is actually only rendered in 256 colour graphics, yet there's an advanced dithering routine in place to drop it down to 16 or even CGA 4 colours while still allowing it to look surprisingly decent in those video modes! It's like the guys making this thing new more about coding than actually making a fun gaming experience. :P
* If for some reason you want to use the EGA mode emulated, you have to actually set your machine type to EGA, otherwise things will behave worse than usual.
* If it sounded like I was complaining that I only got gifted the disks instead of everything, I wasn't. It was meant to be a joke about what you'd probably want to look for if you were actively making a collection of stuff like that. Actually, the guy who gave me this game sent in a whole slew of games so you'll likely be seeing his name at least a couple more times this year. (And many more times following!)
