Pretty sure chainsaws are not a part of standard medical practice... Today on Ancient DOS Games, Gemin's taking a look at Theme Hospital, a simulation game developed by Bullfrog Productions and published through Electronic Arts in 1997. At its most basic level, Theme Hospital is pretty much exactly what you would expect, although the level of satire has been ramped up to 110%, as none of the ailments in the game are "real", none of the cures would ever be legal, and it's actually surprisingly difficult to outright lose in the early parts of the game, given its distinctive Bullfrog flavour of gradually increasing in difficulty the further you get. ------------------------------------------ Additional Information and Corrections: * If you'd like to grab this game digitally, here's a link to do so from GOG: https://www.gog.com/game/theme_hospital/?pp=91dfde1d6e005e422f64a59776234f1f4c80b5e4 * So it turns out there's not actually a Mac release of the game. While researching the different releases I saw there was a "Macintosh" release, but failed to notice it was just in reference to the GOG release in 2012 which supports emulating the DOS version on Macs. :P * For those who've played this game and felt something was missing: There's a PA person who vocally announces various things happening in the hospital quite frequently. When I noticed that happening I went into the options and turned the announcements volume all the way down as low as it would go so I wouldn't have to edit them out later; Vocal effects in the background if games can conflict with my own voiceover! * I completely failed to comment on the advisor person in the bottom right corner who's continually telling you about what's going on. I'm sure a lot of people are familiar with "Clilppit", euphemistically called "Clippy", the Office Assistant introduced in Microsoft Office 97. Well, this advisor here in Theme Hospital is basically like that, except FAR more patronizing and can't be turned off as far as I can tell. That said, they routinely provide very useful information so despite the hostile snark it probably wouldn't be a good idea to disable them anyways. :P * It turns out that there IS a Windows version of this game, but it's on the same CD as the DOS version, so basically, buy the DOS version on CD and you also get the Windows version, or vice versa! ;) ------------------------------------------ Pixelmusement Website: http://www.pixelships.com ADG on Pixelmusement: http://www.pixelships.com/adg Alphabetical Index of ADG Episodes: http://www.pixelships.com/adg/index2.html Kris' Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/kasick @Pixelmusement on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Pixelmusement
