I've seen better framerates on a POP Station... In today's episode of Ancient DOS Games, Gemini's taking a look at the DOS port of the arcade hit Double Dragon, made as a collaboration between Technos Japan, Tradewest, Mastertronic, Arcadia, and even semi-secretly Binary Designs, released in 1988. Even though beat 'em ups are rare for DOS, this one did not get treated very well. The game is clearly unfinished to a degree, missing EGA art for the title screen and various sprites throughout. The controls are also unresponsive, which doesn't help matters either. At least it LOOKS decent despite the lackluster gameplay. ------------------------------------------ Additional Information and Corrections: * Accidentally said "Techmos" instead of "Technos" during the game stats. Whoops. :P * Uh... contrary to the game stats on-screen, this is NOT an Inventory Adventure. I was rushing to finish editing on this otherwise the video wouldn't be going up until mid-Sunday, so... yeah, kinda missed that one. (My template for the game stats has that as the default genre line.) :P * So, I noticed during editing that the title screen references "Binary Designs", the company which hid away their responsibility for the terrible Street Fighter II port we looked at not too long ago. I think we can safely assume they did all the "work" for this port, while the other companies involved were just licensees and publishers. * Fun Fact: The arcade unit for the game actually has THREE buttons: Punch, Kick and Jump. To jump here you have to press down and attack for a kicking jump and up and attack for a high jump... yes... you press DOWN to jump in this port... Brilliant. * I kinda missed going into the story. Basically, Billy's girlfriend Marian gets kidnapped and it's up to him and his twin brother Jimmy to go rescue her from an evil gang, but the surprise twist at the end is that Jimmy's actually the leader of the gang so Billy and Jimmy fight it out with Marian hooking up with the winner. It's... actually really freaking dumb when you think about it... and TOTALLY ABSENT from this DOS port! :o * The traps in the final level are pretty much entirely luck based. If there's a pattern I couldn't figure it out. :/ ------------------------------------------ Pixelmusement Website: http://www.pixelships.com ADG on Pixelmusement: http://www.pixelships.com/adg Alphabetical Index of ADG Episodes: http://www.pixelships.com/adg/index2.html Kris' Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/kasick @Pixelmusement on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Pixelmusement
