In actuality, it's only about as controversial as reading an R-rated novel...
Today on Ancient DOS Games, Gemini's taking a look at the original Grand Theft Auto, developed by DMA Design who would go on to become Rockstar Games after releasing GTA 2, and published primarily by Take-Two Interactive throughout most of Europe at the end of 1997, with later releases by BMG Interactive in the UK specifically and by American Softworks in North America.
This game had quite the reputation in its early days, but not for any natural reasons, as in, not because of anything ACTUALLY in the game, as the gameplay itself is only really a shade above average and otherwise suffers from a lot of little issues which compound together to make the experience a lot more frustrating than it needed to be. Though admittedly, it has decent music and graphics and a rather impressive game engine from a technical standpoint.

Additional Information and Corrections:
* There's a bunch of confusion about the release date out there given that this game didn't just up and release all at once and a lot of people like to point out the file dates on the CDs as proof of a much earlier release than is generally accepted, even though that doesn't make sense since it would take a few weeks at the very least to get CDs stamped, boxed, and shipped out to distributors and retail outlets.
* My copy has a different title logo than was you may be used to seeing, as the original and more well known logo is, quite frankly, a lot better than the one slapped onto the American Softworks release, which is the copy I have. :P
* One important thing I failed to mention in regards to scoring because I didn't remember it until scrubbing footage while editing the video together is that different weapons ALSO have their own multipliers attached. So if you have a 10x multiplier, go after cops who have a 10x multiplier, and use a Flamethrower weapon against them which ALSO has a 10x multiplier, you're effectively getting a 1,000x multiplier on the normal 100 point scoring! (I put a clip in demonstrating this around the end of the video.)
* I failed to go over the individual weapons in the game. There's a Pistol which only fires one bullet per press of the fire button, a Machine Gun which has rapid fire, a Rocket Launcher which explodes on impact, a Flamethrower which has slow moving shots but a huge multiplier attached, and if you have no weapons armed you simply punch people. Also, if you collect multiple weapon pickups of the same weapon they will stack, allowing you to collect up to "99" of any weapon, though that's only individual shots for the Pistol and Rocket Launcher, while for the Machine Gun and Flamethrower it translates into their own time units which don't measure to exact seconds or shots fired.
* Turns out you actually CAN see the target score for a chapter (along with the number of missions and secrets) by pausing the game with the F6 key! I missed this earlier because these stats cycle while the pause screen is up and thus I never noticed the target score was one of the stats given. :P
