Turning a cartoon into a platformer?? What will they think of NEXT?!? 8O Today on Ancient DOS Games, Gemini's taking a look at Tom and Jerry, a 1993 port of the 1991 NES platformer originally developed by Software Creations and published through Hi-Tech Expressions, with this port being done by Albino Frog Software. Facetious first line aside, this is actually not that bad. It's pretty run of the mill and lacks music of any kind, but the controls are fine, the animation on Jerry is fluid, the difficulty is mostly moderate save for a couple late-game levels, though the attack aiming certainly takes some getting used to, but isn't terrible once you have it dialled in. :B ------------------------------------------ Additional Information and Corrections: * To grab a copy of the game from the DOS Games website, follow this link: https://www.dosgames.com/game/tom-and-jerry * OK, so here's the strange tale of what's going on with my physical copy. I have a 5 1/4" disk with no way to read it at the moment, so I grabbed the game from the DOS Games website, but my disk says, plain as day on the label, "Tom & Jerry", with an ampersand instead of the word "and", with a copyright of 1990 and clearly put out by Hi-Tech Expressions. The copyright is to Turner Entertainment though so I thought maybe it had no relation to the game itself. Plus, this game is called "Tom and Jerry" and fits on a 360K 5 1/4" floppy disk so I figured it must be the first one put out BUT NO! The first Tom and Jerry game released for DOS, in 1990, was "Tom & Jerry: Yankee Doodle's CAT-astrophe", followed by plain old "Tom and Jerry" in 1993! It's RARE that the first thing in a series has a subtitle and a later thing (which isn't a reboot) doesn't, but that led to some confusion and having to rework some things last-minute while getting this video ready... BUT, it also means I have a legit copy of Yankee Doodle's CAT-astrophe to try out in the future! :D * Apparently, Level 3-2 isn't actually a house fire, it's the smokestack for a chimney. One of the things missing from this game compared to the NES original are stage transitions so it kinda makes it a little hard to tell where you are in some cases. :P ------------------------------------------ Pixelmusement Website: http://www.pixelships.com ADG on Pixelmusement: http://www.pixelships.com/adg Alphabetical Index of ADG Episodes: http://www.pixelships.com/adg/index2.html Kris' Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/kasick @Pixelmusement on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Pixelmusement ------------------------------------------ Chapters: 00:00 Title and Intro 02:05 Game Stats 04:34 Gameplay 08:33 Respawns & Level Design 13:32 Bosses 16:53 Overall 17:26 DOSBox Configuration 18:59 Credits
