I have to wonder if the minimalist design of the game is due to Macintosh computers being the initial platform...? :o
Today on Ancient DOS Games, Gemini's taking a look at Spectre, a 3D shooter similar to Battlezone, originally created for Macintosh computers by Peninsula Gameworks and published by Velocity in 1991, with the DOS release following not long after.
This game is easily confused with its sequel, Spectre VR, even though they're two different games. On the surface it looks like a typical Battlezone clone, but there's a number of interesting features hiding within which helps to make it more interesting with more possibilities... though it IS ultimately a Battlezone clone; you can only play it for so long at a time before repetition sets in. :P

Additional Information and Corrections:
* I took a second look through the details Anonymous Freak shared with me about this before he sent it my way and noticed that he also has a black DOS disk with the exact same file dates on it, so my theory that the disk colour alludes to the version number is probably bogus. It may simply be that Velocity was in a pinch at some point and decided to use whatever disks they had on hand to fill orders instead of sticking with the black disks you more commonly see for this game.
* Turns out that despite the website still being up, the app links for the remake of the game are very dead. Ah well. :/
