The irony is that in some of the later games, you're not alone and it's not always dark. :P
Today on Ancient DOS Games, Gemini's taking a look at the original Alone in the Dark, one of the first survival horror games to define the genre, developed by Infogrames and published by a variety of different companies depending on platform and market starting in 1992.
There's something to be said for experiencing this game for the very first time. Despite being clunky and inconsistent, it never comes across as unfair or unwinnable, as each room in a sense has its own puzzle or gimmick, plus the overall aesthetics are done pretty well given the limitations of the technology, so it's just a matter of figuring out where to go and what to do... and making sure you're saving your game pretty much every two minutes. :P

Additional Information and Corrections:
* Here's a link to GOG if you wanna grab a digital download of the first three games:
https://www.gog.com/game/alone_in_the_dark/?pp=91dfde1d6e005e422f64a59776234f1f4c80b5e4
* Physical copies of this game had a pretty unique method of copy protection. It was TECHNICALLY manual based, but instead of the game referring to the manual, it instead referred to a VERY tiny book with a massive number of pages, thus making it prohibitively time consuming to photocopy! :o
* Another good contender for first survival horror game would be a C64 title known as "Project Firestart" which came out the same year as "Sweet Home" so without knowing the exact release dates I can't say precisely which came first!
* I've been told that the reason for having two playable characters, and specifically having both male and female playable characters, was to make the game more appealing to the female demographic, at least as far as the game's lead designer was concerned.
