Cruisin' through the universe in 16 colours! :D Today on Ancient DOS Games, Gemini's taking a look at EGA Trek, one of the more popular takes on the original Trek/Spacewar game formula which originated on mainframe computers in the 70s, with this particular game being developed by Nels Anderson and published through his Arcanum Computing label in 1988. While EGA Trek plays decently enough, it's not without a considerable heaping of quirks, some of which aren't explained very well, thus this video is sort of part review and part guide to understanding those quirks. ------------------------------------------ Additional Information and Corrections: * Here's a link to grab a shareware copy of the game from the DOS Games website: https://www.dosgames.com/game/ega-trek/ * Just to allay some confusion: When I was looking up details of the history of these kinds of Trek games I found out that while original code on mainframe computers named the game "Star Trek" most of the time, sometimes it was named "Spacewar" instead. I thought it important to mention both names because of that, but "Spacewar" is also the name of a very different two-player mainframe computer game from the same time period involving two ships trying to find and annihilate each other, and it seems that game is more commonly known as "Spacewar" while the Trek game is more commonly known as "Star Trek". (Also, don't get "Spacewar" confused with "Computer Space"!) * Warp 6 is the fastest you can go without risking random damage to the warp engines. That said, there are reasons to go up to Warp 8, such as if your life support is failing or if a starbase is under attack and needs to be rescued. The only reason to go slower than Warp 6 is if you're running severely low on energy and the situation isn't dire enough to take a chance on doing a raw Energium conversion. ------------------------------------------ Pixelmusement Website: http://www.pixelships.com ADG on Pixelmusement: http://www.pixelships.com/adg Alphabetical Index of ADG Episodes: http://www.pixelships.com/adg/index2.html Kris' Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/kasick @Pixelmusement on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Pixelmusement ------------------------------------------ Chapters: 00:00 Title and Intro 01:24 Game Stats 03:11 Gameplay 17:09 Overall 17:54 DOSBox Configuration 18:53 Credits
