Episode Originally Released: May 30th, 2010 ------------------------------------------ IMPORTANT UPDATE! As of October 31st, 2020, we now all know the TRUE story of the DOS Mega Man games, thanks to Norman Caruso of The Gaming Historian web show and his interview with Stephen Rozner himself! DEFINITELY check his video out for more details about this game's history because I was working from seriously outdated information when making this video ten years ago! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwt5yWJqCzU ------------------------------------------ In order to present a good contrast between good and bad DOS games, I felt doing Mega Man after Stunts was a great way to achieve this... Not only because both games came out in 1990, but because the DOS version of Mega Man is a joke compared to the NES games it was riding on the popularity of. I don't hold it against the guy who made it though, because leaving an important project in the hands of one person and giving them tight deadlines is how we ended up with ET on the Atari 2600... ...granted, 10 years later, we know now that WASN'T the way it happened, but still! :P ------------------------------------------ Additional Information and Corrections: * E.T. for the Atari 2600 is actually not THAT bad a game, don't get me wrong it still has issues and a bit too much random chance thrown in, but once you know how to play it and how to avoid its issues, it's nowhere near as bad as say, Pac-Man on the Atari 2600, which I feel is even worse. (Ms. Pac-Man on the 2600 though is excellent.) * Yes, I know there's a VGA mode, but all it does is properly centre the 320x192 display using VGA control registers, whereas the CGA and EGA modes can't do this. * Tandy computers were old IBM-compatible systems released in the 80s and early 90s which had a few default advancements over other systems, specifically a special 16-colour graphics system which worked in both 320x200 and 160x200 resolution, and a 3-channel sound system which was basically like 3 PC-speakers which could all go at once, along with a noise channel. Mega Man has an option for Tandy graphics on startup, but choosing it defaults to CGA 4-colour graphics. Lame. * I record the voice before I splice these videos together, which is why my explanation of the inconsistent speed thanks to the animations runs way too long compared to the footage. Can be tricky to line this sort of stuff up sometimes. :B * The "Japanese Layout" is a bit of a stereotype, but a good one. A lot of early Japanese PC games had controls that were optimized for minimum hand-movement and always started with Z as your first action button, X as your second, C as your third and V as your fourth. If more than four action keys were needed the next row up, A S D F would be used. I find this approach much easier to play games with than the spacebar + enter combo that was common with most other PC games. ------------------------------------------ Pixelmusement Website: http://www.pixelships.com ADG on Pixelmusement: http://www.pixelships.com/adg Alphabetical Index of ADG Episodes: http://www.pixelships.com/adg/index2.html
