Since I can't make a good video about any of these games individually, let's do 'em all at once! ;D Today on Ancient DOS Games, Gemini's taking a look at a trio of Breakout clones made in the 80s, starting with the 1984 game Bricks made by Vince Bly, moving on to the 1989 game Bananoid by William Rieder, and ending with another 1989 game EGAWalls made by Michelangelo Policarpo. Part of the reason I chose these three games is because all three are freeware and because I played each one of them while I was still a kid on appropriate hardware of the time, so I have a little bit of nostalgia with each of them and perhaps some unique insights, though all three of them are also very quirky and not necessarily in good ways. :P ------------------------------------------ Additional Information and Corrections: * If you want to download Bricks, go here: https://www.dosgames.com/game/bricks-cga * If you want to download Bananoid, go here: https://www.dosgames.com/game/bananoid * If you want to download EGAWalls, go here: https://www.dosgames.com/game/egawalls * When discussing the key remapping with Bricks under DOSBox emulation there's a couple other things to note which aren't as critical and why I didn't bring them up. The first is that you don't HAVE to use the left and right arrow keys to control the paddle but whatever keys you do decide to use you need to make sure to remove ALL mappings to those real keys so as not to trigger keypresses the game doesn't want! * The reason why you can't just use Caps Lock and Insert as the controls under DOSBox emulation is because Caps Lock is treated in a weird way in the official builds, sticking down when you initially press it and only releasing if you press it again. This actually explains some of the difficulties I ran into trying to use the Caps Lock key in other games in the past as it's NOT supposed to behave like that! D: * Something I should point out about Bananoid is that I have NEVER run into a README file for the game across any downloads of it I have ever acquired but it turns our a readme for it DOES exist and explains a few things about why Bananoid feels the way it does. William Rieder actually had TONS of game development experience up to that point, Bananoid was simply an experiment programmed in only a few days, as opposed to being a proper game project developed over the course of weeks/months/years. That makes it way more impressive technically! ...though it still doesn't play all that great and just makes me wish it was better refined. :P ------------------------------------------ Pixelmusement Website: http://www.pixelships.com ADG on Pixelmusement: http://www.pixelships.com/adg Alphabetical Index of ADG Episodes: http://www.pixelships.com/adg/index2.html Kris' Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/kasick @Pixelmusement on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Pixelmusement ------------------------------------------ Chapters: 00:00 Title and Intro 01:16 Bricks 05:42 DOSBox Config for Bricks 08:08 Bananoid 13:30 EGAWalls 19:18 EGAWalls Command Line 22:06 Credits
