They're not the tanks from Tron. Very similar, yes, but they are different. ;)
Today on Ancient DOS Games, Gemini's taking a look at Assault Rigs, a virtual reality themed action game developed and published by Psygnosis in 1996 for the PlayStation and DOS PCs, with a Saturn release following in 1997.
This game was not reviewed very well at the time. It didn't get bad reviews, but only got average to slightly above average scores, even though the game plays extremely well, has a sizable variety of levels, maintains a solid framerate, and even has multiplayer support. But, there are quite a number of quirks which need to be adapted to and the graphics of the intro and first few levels of the game definitely don't set the stage properly for what to expect for most of the experience.
Actually, doing a modern remake or spiritual successor of this game and focussing harder on the VR aspect would probably turn out EXTREMELY well... in fact, I might soon be taking up that challenge myself... I'll let everyone know if/when I do! ;)

Additional Information and Corrections:
* QSound was a special way of processing audio used in some mid-90s PC games which basically took advantage of how sound pressure from the speakers works in order to cause sound from one speaker to become pushed away from or pulled towards the user by using inverse waveforms from the other. It ONLY works properly with a standard 2-speaker stereo setup so if that doesn't describe your speaker system it's best to avoid using it. Most simulated surround systems which work through two speakers do something similar.
* As far as I can tell, the only two differences I've been able to spot between the PS1 and DOS versions so far is that the gems are more colourful and translucent on the PS1, plus the menus are nearly twice as fast on PS1, making them less annoying to navigate. :B
