3D accelerated DOS games?! Yes, it was a thing! ...a very hard to get working on modern systems thing, but a thing all the same! :P In today's episode of Ancient DOS Games, Gemini's taking a look at Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny, the pseudo-sequel to the first game in the series, The Throne of Chaos, as it plays almost nothing like its predecessor. As before, it was developed by Westwood Studios and initially published through Virgin Interactive, though later re-releases were done by Electronic Arts. This game is incredibly polarizing, having both extremely good and extremely terrible aspects through and through, with no one aspect merely being average. On top of that, getting it working its best was incredibly difficult, despite downloading it from GOG, as the initial state it's in when you first try to run it is barely playable, but I do step everyone through the process by the end of the video! ------------------------------------------ Additional Information and Corrections: * If you'd like to grab the first two Lands of Lore games on GOG, here's a link: https://www.gog.com/game/lands_of_lore_1_2/?pp=91dfde1d6e005e422f64a59776234f1f4c80b5e4 * There is technically some graphic violence in this episode, but I minimized it extremely well when selecting which footage to show, as there really isn't a lot of it in the game to begin with, so it shouldn't be even remotely obvious or offensive to those sensitive to it... unless you count how you can see Luther's raw, exposed muscles when he's in his beast form. :P * For some very bizarre reason, the mouse cursor was missing from all of the footage I captured. This might have something to do with how the mouse cursor is processed by dgVoodoo in combination with how I was capturing footage, but trust me, when the cursor's not centre-screen, I could absolutely see it just fine. :B * Something important: When you use the -lowmem fix to get past those crashes, it will mess with some of your audio/video settings, so you'll need to set those back the next time you launch the game without -lowmem. * One neat feature I missed during gameplay and didn't notice until editing is that enemies visually look more beat up when they're low on health! :o ------------------------------------------ Pixelmusement Website: http://www.pixelships.com ADG on Pixelmusement: http://www.pixelships.com/adg Alphabetical Index of ADG Episodes: http://www.pixelships.com/adg/index2.html Kris' Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/kasick @Pixelmusement on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Pixelmusement
