Do you like Doom? What about Doom with multiple character classes and magical weapons? ;) Today on Ancient DOS Games, Gemini's taking a look at Hexen: Beyond Heretic, a medieval/magic themed first person shooter developed by Raven Software and published through Id Software in 1995, making it the second-last commercial Doom Engine game to be released in the days of DOS gaming. Funnily enough, despite the theme, Hexen is probably even more generic than Doom in some regards, with a story that's somehow even more pointless and a fairly tame and surprisingly small variety of monsters to face, but the game also has some impressive map designs, a persistent world which remembers its state as you travel between maps, and a consistent and fair level of difficulty the whole way through... also NUMEROUS instant-death traps; You're gonna be hitting your quicksave and quickload keys very frequently... :P ------------------------------------------ Additional Information and Corrections: * Here's a link to buy the game on GOG. Again, as noted on-screen in the video, the cost on GOG and Steam is identical, it's just when I was getting ready to do my voiceover I somehow pulled up the wrong number on GOG: https://www.gog.com/game/hexen_beyond_heretic/?pp=91dfde1d6e005e422f64a59776234f1f4c80b5e4 * And if you prefer to buy the game on Steam, follow this link instead: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2360/HeXen_Beyond_Heretic/ * The game's multiplayer limit is actually EIGHT players, not four. Dunno how I made that mistake... :o * While capturing footage I forgot the names of the character classes and called the "Fighter" a "Warrior" and the "Mage" a "Wizard". I eventually corrected them and primarily focused on using the Fighter for most of my playthrough, but spent a good chunk of time with the Cleric and Mage as well. :B * I didn't go over all the different items and armours because it would've been a bit of a mess given that most items just have a very basic function to them and you can actually get through most of the game without using any but the most basic items. That said, I do want to point out that some items, like the wings, DO NOT travel with you between hub worlds, so don't be afraid to use your items when it makes sense to! * Turns out there's an interesting limitation with the CD-Audio tracks: Some of the music is MISSING this way! Kinda makes sense as there probably wasn't enough space to digitize ALL of the tracks, but yeah, if you have a wavetable sound card you'll likely want to run the MIDI music directly through it instead of using the CD-Audio! :B ------------------------------------------ Pixelmusement Website: http://www.pixelships.com ADG on Pixelmusement: http://www.pixelships.com/adg Alphabetical Index of ADG Episodes: http://www.pixelships.com/adg/index2.html Kris' Patreon Page: https://www.patreon.com/kasick @Pixelmusement on Twitter: https://twitter.com/Pixelmusement
